The ordinary Gathering follows a recognizable sequence: Lighting of the Laughing Lamp, Minute of Necessary Seriousness, Sacred Reading, Original Talk, Discussion, Offering of the Jest, Cup, Charge, and optional Feast or fellowship. Repetition creates religious identity. Flexibility keeps repetition alive.
The Lamp marks entry into sacred communal time. The Minute of Necessary Seriousness prevents the Church from treating sadness as failure. The Reading connects the present congregation to the Canon and religious history. The Original Talk interprets doctrine for current life. Discussion makes the congregation participants rather than customers. The Offering of the Jest gives mirth a liturgical place. The Cup creates a shared toast without requiring alcohol. The Charge sends worship outward: leave one burden lighter.
A service does not fail because an element is shortened. A ten-minute Gathering during an emergency can still be recognizably Iambist. But leaders should avoid reducing the service to entertainment with a ceremonial introduction. The religious teaching and participatory reflection are central.
Online worship should be designed for presence rather than passive streaming. Leaders can greet participants, invite responses, use chat or voice discussion, call people by chosen names, permit cameras off, and establish clear participation norms. The technology is a venue, not the liturgy itself.
