Truth, Doubt, and the Right to Question

Iambism has doctrine, but it does not treat honest doubt as disloyalty. The joke itself is a form that tests certainty. It turns an object and asks whether another angle reveals something the solemn view concealed.

Members may disagree about whether Iambe should be understood as a literal divine being, a sacred personification, a mythic presence, an archetype, or a poetic name for a recurring human encounter with restorative mirth. Covenant Membership requires commitment to the ethical and communal disciplines of the Church more than uniform metaphysics.

This breadth has limits. A person cannot invoke private interpretation to justify cruelty, exploitation, fraud, discrimination, or misuse of Church property. Interpretive freedom concerns metaphysics and symbolism; ethical accountability remains communal.

The Church distinguishes mystery from vagueness. “It is a mystery” should not be used to avoid factual questions that have factual answers. Historical claims should be supported historically. Financial claims should be supported financially. Religious poetry is not a substitute for accurate bookkeeping.

Leaders are expected to correct errors publicly when the Church has taught something false as fact. Intellectual humility is a form of levity: the mind, like the ego, should be able to survive discovering that it was wrong.
