The Gathering of the Returning Smile

The ordinary Gathering is a live religious service centered on original teaching, discussion, sacred reading, voluntary humor, and a closing charge. It is not defined by the consumption of prerecorded entertainment.

Lighting of the Laughing Lamp

The service opens with a symbolic light and a call to gather.

Minute of Necessary Seriousness

A period of silence or spoken remembrance acknowledges grief, hardship, and those for whom joy is difficult.

Sacred Reading

A passage from the Ancient Witness, New Cycle, Book of Mirth, Book of Feasts, Dialogues, or Ledger of Tomorrow.

Original Talk

A Celebrant, minister, Reader, or approved speaker delivers an original teaching related to Iambist doctrine.

Discussion

Participants question, interpret, challenge, and apply the teaching.

Offering of the Jest

Members may offer a joke, story, poem, comic observation, or short performance. Participation is voluntary.

The Cup

A toast or moment of shared intention. Any lawful beverage or no beverage is acceptable.

The Charge

The congregation is sent out with the command to leave one burden lighter.

The form is stable enough to be recognizable and flexible enough to fit circumstances. A Gathering may be twenty-five minutes or two hours. What matters is that it remains recognizably worship rather than a social event to which a religious label is attached afterward.
